Best Wine Dinner Value in the City

This celebration of fine food and wine is intimate in scale and will be held next door (same address) in db's sister restaurant Lumière. The newly renovated, 40-seat Lumière is British Columbia's only Grand Chef Relais & Chateaux restaurant. Wine dinner guests should arrive to 2551 West Broadway, where the welcome reception will begin promply at 7pm. Wine Dinners generally conclude no later than 10pm.

Wine dinners are social but also informative in nature, with tasting notes and commentary provided by our Sommelier and Wine Director Kevin Van Hullebush and a special guest from or representing the winery.

Wine Dinners sell out very quickly, so be sure to reserve your space immediately (be sure to reference wine dinner name in the online reservation). A credit card reservation is required upon booking. The cost for the wine dinners is $95 per person, plus tax and gratuity - making these the best wine dinner value in the city.

Please inquire directly with Sommelier Kevin Van Hullebush or General Manager Chris González or call 604.739.7115.

TASTING  NOTES

woodward chard R.jpgWoodward Canyon Chardonnay, 2009

Our 2009 Walla Walla Valley Chardonnay is produced from our oldest Estate grapes. Originally planted in 1977, this southeast-facing chardonnay vineyard (clone 108) could easily qualify as “old vines” at 33 years of age. The soil is Ritzville Silt Loam and is of marginal productivity. Plant spacing is 3 feet by 12 feet giving a density of over 1,200 plants per acre. Cluster thinning, shoot positioning, and leaf stripping gave beautifully mature fruit at just over two tons per acre. This Chardonnay was 100% barrel fermented in one year old French Burgundy barrels. Rich flavors of peach and apple marry with vanilla, spice and hazelnut offer complex aromas in the nose and balanced, generous fruit in the mouth. At the same time, there is an elegant, refined side and shows a very distinct sense of place.

woodward cab R.jpgArtist Series Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007

The 2007 vintage was fabulous for “Artist Series”, nicer even than the fantastic 2006. We achieved perfect ripening with physiological maturity achieved through shoot thinning, leaf stripping, and green harvesting and generally improved cultural practices throughout the vineyards. All fruit was in by the third week of October.  This Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in very small stainless steel tanks and was punched down or pumped over twice a day. Aging in French Chateaux barrels has produced a well proportioned, complex and generous red wine. Of our own doing, we have chosen to back off on the use of new oak in this wine as these vineyards have gotten older allowing them to express a sense of place.

This wine has a generous nose of spicy oak and cedar integrated with bright and very ripe black fruits and cherry. A sweet, rich mouth feel begins with cassis and ripe black berry, leading towards chocolate and mocha. The finish is complex, generous, and long. While this wine can be enjoyed now it will definitely benefit from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should develop for eight years or more.

woodward barbera R.jpgArtist Series Barbera, 2009

We have been growing Barbera at Woodward Canyon for 13 years and tracking every vintage. This wine expresses a richer, riper and fuller northern-Italian version. It has a deep, dark color and a generous nose of ripe black fruits; subtle flavors of vanilla and crisp red fruits add to the layers of complexity. This Barbera shows fantastic balance, great concentration of fruit and soft mature tannins; the finish is generous, silky and long. Given the balance and proportion of this wine, it could age for 3 to 4 years although it drinks beautifully right now.

About the artwork and the artist:

The label was created by Jordan Small, Rick & Darcey's daughter, for an art project in high school. The label, called 'The City Goat', features a goat in Seattle. The label took a silver medal at the San Francsico Chronicle's label competition.

DOMAINE NOTES

woodward hills R.jpgLocated in the Walla Walla Valley appellation of Washington State, Woodward Canyon Winery was started in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small.

Since that time, the winery has consistently produced premium, award-winning cabernet sauvignons and merlots as well as chardonnays.

Early on Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity. Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small, increasing its production from 1,200 cases in 1981 to our current production of about 17,000 cases. About 7,000 of this total production is Nelms Road, Woodward Canyon's second label.

woodward tasting.jpgWoodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and of Walla Walla Valley Vinea, the Winegrower's Sustainable Trust.

Woodward Canyon Winery is located in Lowden, about 13 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. The tasting room is a restored 1870's farmhouse.

It All Starts In The Vineyard:

Marginal fruit, even in the hands of the most adept winemaker, can only make wines of middling quality. Along with our 41-acre Estate Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley, we source fruit from a handful of well-established Washington state growers whose grapes have proven over the course of the years to provide the best possible material for winemaking that we can procure. Woodward Canyon is also a joint owner of Champoux Vineyard, one of the older vineyards in the State.
